Nov. 19, 2007
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Kristina Collymore (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) equaled her career high with 14 points and recorded her first career double-double by adding a team-high 11 assists and the Bucknell women's basketball team staved off a second-half rally from Howard to defeat it 89-79 and pick up its first victory of the 2007-08 season Monday evening at Sojka Pavilion.
Collymore was one of five Bucknell (1-3) players in double figures as Hope Foster (Washington, D.C./Dunbar), Lauren Schober (Chicago, Ill./Regina Dominican) and freshman Taylor Phillips (South Parkersburg, W. Va./Parkersburg South), who made her first career start, tied for team-high honors with 17 points. Kesha Champion (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) added 16 points as the Bison had five players in double figures for the first time since defeating Iona 90-66 in 2004-05. All five also recorded their season highs in points.
Collymore was the story of the game as she dished out nine of her career-high assists in the first half, helping Bucknell to a 50-41 halftime advantage. At the half, Collymore had four points, a career high-tying six rebounds and four points, putting her in position to become the first Bucknell player since Molly Creamer to tally a triple-double. Creamer's came Jan. 3, 2001 against Cleveland State. Collymore finished the game just two rebounds shy of a triple-double.
Behind a new starting unit that featured Collymore and Phillips, Bucknell streaked out to an early 11-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game as Phillips had back-to-back fast break layups to cap the run. The homestanding Bison were able to extend the lead to as many as 12 points on four occasions, including 30-18 following a second-chance layup by Foster. However, Howard reeled off nine straight points and cut the Bucknell lead to just three before a Phillips 3-pointer from the right wing put Bucknell up 33-27.
The first half finished with a flurry as the teams combined for 22 points in the final 3:30 of the stanza. Schober had seven of Bucknell's final 12 points, including a 3-pointer in the waning seconds, as Bucknell went into the locker room with a 50-41 edge. It marked the first time it had scored 50 points in a half since tallying 52 against Navy in January 2006.
Following a fast break layup from Phillips, who was 7 of 15 from the floor, Bucknell led 66-50 with just over 13 minutes to play. However, Howard (0-7), which had three players foul out to boost its season total to 14, began to foul with regularity and trimmed the lead back to six points at 67-61 in less than three minutes as the game became more ragged.
Howard closed to within one point on two occasions in the final five minutes, but never took the lead. Shannon Carlisle, who led Howard with 25 points, her third consecutive game with at least 24, capped a 6-0 spurt with a pair of free throws to cut the Bucknell lead to 74-73 with 4:51 on the clock. Just two minutes later a 3-pointer from the left corner by Asha Santee with Foster flying at her went down and made the score 78-77. That was the last field goal for Howard as its only other points came on a short jumper by Shannon Carlisle with 0.4 seconds on the clock.
During the final 2:49 Bucknell was 7-for-8 from the free throw line, led by a 4-for-4 showing from Champion. Over the same stretch, Howard was 1-for-6 from the floor with one turnover. Overall, Bucknell shot 31 of 38 (81.6%) from the line, while Howard was just 10 of 15 (66.7%).
For the first time this season, Bucknell outrebounded an opponent, pulling down 42 rebounds compared to 40 for Howard. Foster led the way with a season-high nine boards as she went over the 700 mark for her career. Collymore added her career-high eight, while Champion registered seven, just one shy of equaling her career high.
For the third straight game Bucknell turned the ball over more than 20 times as it totaled 22 miscues. However, it forced 21 Howard turnovers.
Bucknell shot a season-best 27 of 59 (45.8%) from the floor as each of the five starters were within one made field goal of converting at least 50% of their field goals. Howard converted 40% of its field goals, becoming the first Bucknell regular-season opponent in nine outings to shoot that well. Carlisle and Santee combined to go 18 of 44 for 49 points, while the rest of the Howard squad was 12 of 31.
For the eighth consecutive season Bucknell won its second home game of the year. It also avoided its first 0-4 start since 1994-95.
Charae Baulkman led Howard with nine rebounds, including six on the offensive end. She also added eight points before fouling out late in the second half.
Bucknell is idle until Sunday, Nov. 25, when its plays the first of three consecutive road games in New York. The Bison will take on Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y., at 3 p.m. Bucknell has won three in a row against the Big Red.
